For once in her life Snooki is saying no to something, but it may not be for the better. The pint-sized star of MTV’s Jersey Shore delivered her first child this weekend, a boy named Lorenzo Dominic. Shortly after the little guy’s arrival the proud new mama Tweeted, “I am SO IN LOVE with my son Lorenzo Dominic! I had my little man last night, healthy at 6lbs! HE’S MY WORLD!”.
But maybe only a part of her world so long as he doesn’t interrupt her hangover sleep or need something to eat. Most moms are willing to give their newborns even a couple of weeks of breast milk, but Snooki has made it known in many media interviews that she’s disgusted by the idea of breastfeeding. “It’s kind of like you’re a cow and you’re just milking,” she has said.
Few nursings mothers would disagree; the demands can be pretty exhausting. However, most would say the sacrifice is worth the monumental benefits to both mom and baby. Breast milk is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antibodies that are DNA-matched to your baby! Breast milk is also dynamic, as it changes to match your baby’s development to ensure she is getting a balance of fat, sugar, protein, and water. Breast milk is more easily digested. The biggest benefit may be the disease-fighting protection that breast milk offers. Ear infections tend to be lower or non-existent, with less instances of diarrhea and colds, too.
As for mom, all the time and effort that goes in to nursing pays off for her. The skin-to-skin contact can be a major stress reducer as well as help keep milk producing smoothly. Women who nurse have lower instances of type 2 diabetes, breast and ovarian cancers, and postpartum depression. Because of the calorie demands to produce the milk, nursing mothers note they lose the baby weight much more quickly.
If none of those benefits would sell Snooki, that last point would be the only hope. She was quoted as saying “I would die if I were her size,” referencing Jessica Simpson’s weight gain during pregnancy. Women are advised to gain about 25-30 pounds while pregnant, and the reality star, already riddled with eating disorders and yo-yo dieting, had said she only wanted to gain 15 pounds.
She’s not interested in nursing, nor is she interested in giving up party nights with her partner Jionni, Lorenzo’s father. She said that if they wake up hungover then they aren’t “going near the child…. God forbid we drop our baby!”
Yes, God forbid.
